Asiatic Golden Cat, Catopuma temminki. In this study we have radiocollared one male and one female Asiatic
golden cat. The female cat is melanistic to a degree that her coat is dark brown in color, but not true black. The male cat
also exhibits an interesting pelage of light brown or tan. Neither of these cats fits the “typical” golden color of this species.
However, the variation these two individuals show may not be that unique as golden cats are known to show tremendous variation in coat color and pattern throughout their range.
The male golden cat has so far roamed a home range of 38 km2 (n=62 radio locations), and the female’s territory is 27.6
km2 (n=76 radio locations). These far ranging cats also exhibit an arrhythmic activity pattern (mean: 58% active).
Leopard Cat, Prionailurus bengalensis. To date, 18 leopard cats have been captured and 10 (8 males, 2 females) radio collared and tracked
for 2-10 months. Preliminary data indicate that leopard cats occupy overall home ranges of 2.4 - 11.1 km2 (n = 6 cats, >20 radio locations). Leopard cats exhibit an arrhythmic activity pattern
(mean: 42% active, dominated by crepuscular tendencies.
Although not as rare as the other cats in this study, leopard cats are very important for understanding what mechanisms favor them over other small cats and how we may
better implement conservation strategies. Leopard cats will most likely be the most frequently captured cat in this study
(higher sample size) and thus more appropriate for looking at species trends rather than individual trends.
